myrtle & sage

So...LA was amazing. One of the highlights was a twilight hike at Runyon Canyon. As the sun set, the tiny buildings and houses and cars began to light up and we could see the city stretch for miles underneath. While I don't see myself leaving NYC any time soon, California does have that Californication appeal.

As we walked the dry brush emitted sweet, herbal smells. I stopped to pick sage leaves, crushing them between my fingers and releasing their scent. There was another bush; I think it was myrtle. I love myrtle, with it's fruity, almost apricot note.

To see more of what we did in LA, check out our instagram.

We ate: Pine and Crane, In-N-Out, Blockheads Shaved Ice, Sweet Rose Creamery, Axe and Sugarfish Sushi.

We shopped: Clare Vivier, Dream Collective, MyrtleBroome Street General, Tradesmen, General Store, Tenoversix, Mohawk General Store, and Tortoise General Store.

We chilled: Runyon Canyon, Point Dume, and Korean karaoke.

Thanks to Jennifer for the photos above.

the mociun fragrance: inspired by sicily

1photo-3 copy 2photo-3 copy 3Screen Shot 2014-05-06 at 4.15.55 PMphoto-3 copyThe MCMC x MOCIUN perfume oil is inspired by the designer's trip to the southern Italian island of Sicily. Trailing bougainvillea flowers along rocky coastal beaches, long seafood lunches served with crisp wine, and a lifestyle of subtle luxury and relaxation define the Mediterranean sea town.

Taking cues from Mociun's jewelry line, we worked to create a fragrance you could wear everyday that felt special, like her signature of delicate gold bands decorated with unusual combinations of diamonds and rare stones. The combination of bright and bitter Italian neroli flowers with warm, skin-enhancing amber and clean white musk are unmistakable yet very wearable.

maui part 3

waterfalldetailmeilifernsfammeili2africantulipThis is my last set of photos from our trip to Maui in January (see parts 1 + 2). Perhaps one of the most vexing things about Hawaii is the grand scale of the world. I'm used to being in Brooklyn, looking out my small rectangular living room windows onto a brick building across the street. From my roof I can see the sky, yes, but between buildings and clothing lines and fire escapes. The lady in the photos is my best gal friend MeiLi. She's as adventurous as they come and together we explored hidden waterfalls, dark caves, and secret beaches.

maui, part 2

1234567One of the best parts of being on vacation was being able to spend so much time with my son. At nine months, he's so fun! He doesn't talk yet, but is totally interactive. To be able to see the wonder on his face when we were hiking through a bamboo forest, or the delight he had playing in the sand, was so restorative for my own soul. I was able to experience those things with the freshness he has. There is so much fresh produce in Hawaii, and I loved having him try papaya, passion fruit, mountain-grown strawberries, and even seaweed. It's funny to me that where you live geographically can impact your life so much. New York is such a driven city. It's hectic and fast-paced and brusque. It's home, but I can't deny that I wondered what it would be like to move to paradise.

maui, part 1

bamboofeetbamboo2jumpkulashellsalohadogandsurfThis week I'll be sharing photos from our trip to Hawaii. In January, my little family (that is, my husband, 9 month old son, and I) decided we'd try this big experiment. I own my own business and my husband is a Community Organizer at an art museum so our schedules can be pretty hectic - working at night, working on the weekends, etc. I never did get a real maternity leave, though I can't complain as I have the freedom to create my own schedule. Anyway, if there's one time during the year when things slow down juuust a little, it's January. And with the record snows this year, we made the leap and decided to leave for a whole month. My beautiful friend MeiLi has a daughter just a few weeks older than our son, and we had the amazing luck of staying with her in Kula, on the slopes of the volcano Haleakala. The sweeping views down to the ocean every morning still haunt me.
