introducing the humanity fragrance third edition

This is such an exciting day for us, as we are able to officially debut three new fragrances: CROWNED in VICTORY, MONOI de TIARE, and AMERICAN BEAUTY. They are available for purchase at Anthropologie stores nationwide and online

If you've been following us for a while, you've probably heard about the Humanity Project, a series of fragrances whose inspiration comes from volunteer experiences with community organizations, locally and abroad. A portion of the perfume sales is then donated to the organization.

For this Third Edition, we partnered with El Puente, a community organization in Brooklyn, NY. We taught a six week perfume making class to twelve young women as part of the Youth Leadership Program. Starting as a series of interviews uncovering their personal stories, each woman conceived of a custom fragrance and learned over 75 ingredients to blend with.

These three new fragrances are inspired by this experience.

*While supplies last, we will be sending free samples of AMERICAN BEAUTY and CROWNED in VICTORY with every full-size order placed at www.mcmcfragrances.com.

11 postcards from the humanity project

When we launched AMARA and SAVANN, the two fragrances from the Humanity Project second edition, we included postcards in all of the packaging (yes, we stamped 5,000 postcards!) addressed back to our studio. We asked you all to wear the perfume and tell us of any moments of compassion you may experience. The fragrances AMARA and SAVANN were inspired by our volunteer trip to Cambodia and we wanted to see if we were able to convey that through the fragrance. Thank you so much to everyone who sent their postcards back! Sincerely, thank you. Here are 11 of our favorites.

We recently added a limited number of AMARA to our online shop. The Special Edition Glass Heart bottles are also available in both scents.

amara is back

Humanity_AmaraSavannAMARA is back! We have a limited number of the 40ml eau de parfum available in our shop - ON SALE (now $58). The silkscreen label on the bottle is slightly damaged.

An ancient Hindi word for roots, Amara draws from the mysterious spiritual nature of Angkor Wat and the amazing sight of trees overtaking ancient temples. This fragrance is part of the Humanity Fragrance Second Edition, inspired by a volunteer trip to the Working For Children Rainbow Orphanage in rural Cambodia. el puente

ElPuenteIf you don't know about the Humanity Project, it's an ongoing collection of fragrances based on volunteer experiences. This summer I had the pleasure of teaching a six week perfume course to a group of 14 and 15 year old young women at El Puente, a community organization right here in my own Brooklyn neighborhood. In the coming weeks I'll share much more, but just wanted to share the photo above. That's me in the middle. And that little guy there is my baby!

humanity fragrance third edition

123456789We are so excited to announce that the Humanity Fragrance Third Edition is under way! Each year I volunteer with a different organization, and based on my experience create a fragrance to reflect the people and place, and feelings encountered during the process.

The Humanity Fragrance series was born out of the desire to create fragrances that mean more to the wearer and maker. This year I am working with a community organization in my very own neighborhood of Brooklyn (last February I was in rural Cambodia, and the year before in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico).

El Puente is a non-profit organization that services the south side of Williamsburg. I am working with their summer youth leadership program by offering a perfume apprenticeship to 15 young women in the program over the course of six weeks. This past week, I worked with the girls to write a brief, or the inspiration for their fragrance. I asked them to think about a person, place or experience that's been important in their life. From there, we will choose ingredients to represent the various aspects of their story. In the end, I hope to find my own inspiration from who they are and create the next edition of the Humanity Fragrance.

So far I've met Stephanie, whose name means Crowned in Victory; Leidy who wants to become a tattoo artist; and Alba, who wants to create a fragrance based on the flowers of her hometown of Santiago in the Dominican Republic. Stay tuned...

mcmc x anthropologie

I am beyond excited today to finally share with you a project I've been working on with Anthropologie for the last year. Remember that trip to Cambodia and all of those photos? (You can check them out here, here, here and here.) Well, that trip was the inspiration for SAVANN and AMARA, two new scents exclusive to Anthropologie. They can be found at all of their stores nationwide, as well as on their website.

Two years ago I created the Humanity Fragrance with public arts organization Trust Art, a fragrance inspired by a volunteer trip to the Casa de los Angeles in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The idea was to create a fragrance inspired by the feeling of compassion, and see if that sentiment could be carried to the wearer.

When Anthropologie approached me about a collaboration, I jumped at the chance to renew the Humanity Fragrance Project with a second edition. Anthropologie was so kindly open to that, and supported me when I embarked on a trip to rural Cambodia, where I volunteered with six friends at the Working for Children Rainbow Orphanage, then visited the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat temples.

One friend who came with me was photographer Harry Fellows, whose wonderful photos below became the inspiration for the packaging. Designer Paul Wagenblast worked with illustrator Aidan Koch to interpret the varying things we saw into a playful moodboard of our trip.

SAVANN, named after one of the 37 beautiful kids at Rainbow, reflects the playful nature of the kids, with notes of mango, pink lotus and soft sandalwood. AMARA, an ancient Hindi word for roots, draws more from the mysterious spiritual nature of Angkor Wat and the amazing sight of trees overtaking ancient temples. AMARA is a darker, woodier scent with regional black pepper, cinnamon, spider lily, jasmine, and Kambodi Oud.

Each fragrance contains a stamped postcard addressed back to the MCMC Fragrances studio, encouraging wearers to tell us about any moments of compassion one may feel while wearing the fragrance. We'll post the messages here on the blog as they roll in. A portion of the proceeds from the fragrance will go back to the Rainbow Orphanage, to build a new boys dormitory.

Thanks again to Anthropologie for their tremendous support, and if you fancy, please shop the fragrance here!
